Turner Castle was approached by East Architects to assist with the design and act as main contractor on a landscaping project for Islington Green primary school. The school playground, a bleak courtyard of tarmac and concrete, was identified as a problem area and became the principal focus of the new scheme.

The scheme, developed through close consultation with the pupils and teachers, introduced a series of new playful elements into the courtyard; a timber bridge connecting assembly hall and canteen; a small outdoor room made of sleepers, a grass verge, flower beds and trees. These elements were intended to break up the space visually and to create smaller play spaces to encourage a greater range of activities.
